August Wolf painting from 1892
August Wolf (20 April 1842 - 19 February 1915) was a German painter known for his copies of 16th century Venetian paintings. He was born in Weinheim and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich as well as in Paris, where he was influenced by the Impressionists.
Wolf often travelled to Venice and stayed in the city for long periods. There he copied the works of the old Venetian masters for the collection of Count Schack. His copies are characterised by a high level of technical skill and a careful observation of Renaissance painting.
In addition to his copies, Wolf also created his own paintings, mainly landscapes and cityscapes, which are characterised by a vivid colour palette and a fine observation of nature. His works were shown in many exhibitions and honoured with awards and distinctions.
Today, August Wolf's paintings can be found in museums and collections throughout Germany. His copies of Venetian masterpieces are among the most significant achievements in German art history.
Wolf's works from the Schack collection were given their own two-storey hall with a skylight as an exhibition room in the new Schackgalerie building constructed in 1909. Together with the entire collection, these works became the property of the Free State of Bavaria in 1939 and have been part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections ever since. They are currently part of the holdings of the Neue Pinakothek and the Schackgalerie, which has been known as the Schack Collection since its renovation, redesign and reopening in 2009. In the latter, a selection of Wolf's copies are exhibited together with copies by Franz von Lenbach in the largest room of the house, the so-called Kopiensaal.
